MP polls: Tapping Jhabua migrant workers

INDORE: Grappling with largescale migration of its voters population to nearby Gujarat state, the district administration at Jhabua is now sending its teams to Gujarat, asking them to stay back at their home for elections after Diwali The district, which has a voter population of over seven lakh, has roughly 25,000 people who are working in Gujarat. Of this, the percentage of people who are employed full-time in companies is still lesser with most of them earning their living there on daily wages.The district administration sent their team of members comprising revenue department, health department and women and child development department to get in touch with migrant labourers in three tehsils — Morvi, Bharuch and Godhra. “We found out that Jhabua residents there have their own exclusive colonies — further divided into blocks of Ranapur, Jhabua, Thandla, Meghnagar, Petlawad. There is a small version of Jhabua in these places, who go out every morning in search of work,” district collector Ashish Saxena said. The administration is now planning to retain them in the district for next 15 days, by giving them work under MNREGA and asking them to fill out forms.“For permanent workers in Gujarat, we are getting in touch with their employers asking them to grant leave for a day so that they may come for the polling on November 28,” Saxena said.On Monday —11 more teams of the district administration will leave for 12 more districts and tehsils of Gujarat to cover remaining population of our migrants. Initially, the objective is to tap migrant population for increasing voting percentage. In coming time, this system will be used by the administration to provide basic healthcare, nutrition and vaccination to women and children, who have accompanied their family members in the other state.
