Congress dismisses Modi wave, but wary of RSS Ram Mandir tactic

Bhagwat knows that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and BJP state governments have failed on the development front. The RSS, as a cultural organisation, wants a law enacted so that Ram Mandir can be built. What worries them is Ram Mandir, and the possibility of it overshadowing state issues.“Unlike 2013, there is no Modi wave in this election. BHOPAL: Five weeks ahead of assembly elections, Congress claims it is no longer troubled by prospects of a Narendra Modi wave or the Prime Minister’s campaign schedule. That’s why, as a calculated strategy, he is trying to save BJP governments by raising the Ram Mandir issue,” Nath said. There is no Modi Magic or Modi Wave in the state, he said.

BHOPAL: Five weeks ahead of assembly elections, Congress claims it is no longer troubled by prospects of a Narendra Modi wave or the Prime Minister’s campaign schedule. What worries them is Ram Mandir, and the possibility of it overshadowing state issues.“Unlike 2013, there is no Modi wave in this election. Rather, Congress is more concerned about the smokescreen being created by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat,” a senior Congress leader told TOI on Friday.Congress, which has been campaigning aggressively under AICC president Rahul Gandhi for the past month, is suddenly rattled by the Vijay Dashami speech of Bhagwat, who on Thursday asked for enactment of a law to clear the path for Ram Mandir construction in Ayodhya. The RSS chief says Ram temple should be constructed to maintain “self-esteem” and “environment of goodwill”.“With elections due in five states, the BJP-RSS combine is purposely raking up the Ram Mandir issue again,” said PCC chief Kamal Nath. “RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and BJP’s statements have been changing and shifting for years. Bhagwat knows that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and BJP state governments have failed on the development front. That’s why, as a calculated strategy, he is trying to save BJP governments by raising the Ram Mandir issue,” Nath said. There is no Modi Magic or Modi Wave in the state, he said. “Quite the contrary. The more BJP chants the name of Modi, the more Congress will benefit from it. Narendra Modi’s policies have adversely affected all sections of society,” Kamal Nath argued.Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh believes MP’s political situation has “drastically changed” from what it was in the last assembly election. “Today, there are plenty of issues against Narendra Modi. from the Rafale deal to Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya and loan waiver to top 15 industrialists while farmers commit suicide. The complete misgovernance of the country and false promises of ‘acche din’ and ‘2 crore jobs’ now lie exposed. Claims made on black money, demonetisation and GST have backfired. BJP should be wary and find their feet before launching Modi to campaign in the state,” Ajay Singh said.Rahul Gandhi has been particularly aggressive in his MP campaigns, taking on PM Modi on the Rafale deal, accusing BJP governments of corruption and protecting “those who fled with the country’s money”. Out to blunt Rahul’s attacks, BJP national vice-president Prabhat Jha said: “Congress should know that the biggest factor in the country is Narendra Modi. Whether in Himachal, Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh — everywhere the factor was Narendra Modi, not Rahul Gandhi.”“And if there has been no development by the BJP governments in the Centre and state, then why is Congress visiting temples in Madhya Pradesh?” Jha wondered, pointing out that Congress claimed it will construct Ram Van Gaman Path if voted to power. “And it is Rahul Gandhi who is in the news for offering puja at various temples. They started the Ram and temples issue, not us,” said Jha. “When BJP leaders go to temple, it does not become news. What Mohan Bhagwatji said is the RSS point of view, which has nothing to do with elections. The RSS, as a cultural organisation, wants a law enacted so that Ram Mandir can be built. Congress’ problem is that it sees Ram temple from a political angle and that invariably pulls them down,” Jha said.
