JABALPUR: A government employee on poll duty has been suspended after being caught on camera, allegedly taking money from a BJP candidate's aide when he came to file his nomination papers in Jabalpur on November 9.Babbu is a three-time BJP MLA from Jabalpur West and a seasoned politician. The suspended official, Bharat Singh Rathore, had to have known the room was under CCTV surveillance and that there were smartphone cameras running. The whole episode would seem straight out of a slapstick comedy, but what the cameras captured is hardly funny, say officials.Babbu had joined the rush at the office of district election officer to beat the deadline for nomination on November 9. TNNHe submitted his papers as BJP's candidate for Jabalpur West before the Gorakhpur subdivisional magistrate, and his representatives deposited Rs 10,000 as security deposit, said sources.Rathore, who was posted at the SDM's office, then allegedly remarked: "Par, yeh to sirf Rs 10,000 hain (but this is only Rs 10,000)." Cameras were running as an aide of Babbu handed Rathore Rs 1,000 more, which he allegedly pocketed, said officials. No one knows who put the video on social media. But someone did complain and it reached the desk of the collector, who took suo motu cognisance of it and ordered a probe.Rathore was handed a showcause notice, and then suspended on Saturday evening. The act is against Madhya Pradesh Civil Services Conduct Rules 1965 and violates Prevention of Corruption Act, said an official.
