Hope Congress would rectify this mistake in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.”He gave example of Tikamgarh district where SP candidates managed to get large number of votes. Though it did not benefit at all the parties like SAPAKS, upper caste voters are believed to have favoured Congress. BHOPAL: When Congress was struggling to reach the magic number to form government in Madhya Pradesh, party leaders were left wondering whether a pre-poll alliance with Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party would have worked in their favour. In the run-up to the Assembly polls, Congress had failed to forge an alliance with SP and BSP because BSP had been bargaining for large number of seats. “BSP wanted 50 seats in state,” Congress sources had claimed after the alliance had failed to materialise. On Tuesday, as Congress inched towards winning the number of seats required to form the government, Bahujan Samaj Party and SP have reportedly ‘confirmed’ their support to the party.Samajwadi Party spokesman in MP, Dr Sunilam said, “Had there been an alliance, we would have touched 140 seats in the state. In Niwadi, Congress could manage only 10,875 votes while SP and BSP got 38326 and 20463 votes, respectively .Traditionally, BSP and SP have their strongholds in Gwalior-Chambal, Bundelkhand and Vindhya Pradesh.A senior political analyst from Gwalior Chambal region, Dev Shrimali however, differs, “It’s good that the Congress did not enter into alliance with BSP or it would have lost a large number of seats that the party has won in the region because of the upper caste factor.”“Gwalior-Chambal region had witnessed large scale violence after a dalit agitation in April this year leading to six deaths.”“ People have not yet forgotten the violence and a Congress-BSP alliance would have harmed Congress prospects,” he said.Political analysts feel that the agitation related to amendment in SC/ST Atrocities Act had mobilised the upper caste voters before the elections.
