Madhya Pradesh results: Congress leader Kamal Nath to take oath as CM on December 17

BHOPAL: Chief minister-designate Kamal Nath will take an oath of office at a ceremony held at the Lal Parade Grounds here on Monday, December 17 at 1.30pm. He will be the 18th chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. State PCC media committee chairperson Shobha Oza said, “Obviously, after 15 years of struggle we are having a Congress chief minister taking the oath of office. Asked how many cabinet ministers will also be sworn-in at the same function, Kamal Nath said, “We have not decided on that as yet”.The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) along with four independent legislators held their meeting to elect their leader on Wednesday evening. All party workers who strived through these years would want to witness the event and we are ready for it.”

The CLP unanimously left the decision to AICC president Rahul Gandhi. After a long meeting between Rahul Gandhi, Central observers AK Antony and Jeetendra Singh, Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia – it was decided that Kamal Nath would lead CLP.At 11 am on Friday, Nath along with senior Congress leaders AICC general secretary in-charge of state affairs Deepak Babaria, former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, former Union minister Suresh Pachauri, Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, former Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh and former Union minister of state Arun Yadav reached Raj Bhavan and met Governor Anandiben Patel with a letter from the CLP.The letter said, “The Congress Legislative Party in its meeting held on 13.12.2018 has unanimously elected Shri Kamal Nath as its leader for the 15th MP Legislative assembly.” It said that Congress is the single largest party and is staking claim to form the government with the support of Bahujan Samajwadi Party, Samajwadi Party and four independent legislators. The letter gave details of having 121 MLAs including two from BSP, one from SP and the independents added to the total 114 MLAs of the Congress.“Having completed the process of election of its leader, the Congress Legislative Party requests your Excellency to invite Shri Kamal Nath to form the government and administer an oath of Office of the Chief Minister of the State of Madhya Pradesh in accordance with the Constitutional mandate,” the letter said.A reply came from the Governor’s office in which she appointed him chief minister under provisions of section 164 of the Constitution and permitted him to constitute his cabinet.State Congress said that the swearing-in of Kamal Nath as chief minister would be an elaborate ceremony. State PCC media committee chairperson Shobha Oza said, “Obviously, after 15 years of struggle we are having a Congress chief minister taking the oath of office. All party workers who strived through these years would want to witness the event and we are ready for it.”
