JABALPUR/BHOPAL: Jabalpur was a prominent place of education, socio-cultural and political activities even in the pre-independent India. The Tripuri session of Congress had taken place in Jabalpur in 1939. However, after formation of MP in 1956, barring the period when D P Mishra was the chief minister of the state from 1963 to 1967, Mahakaushal region had never been in the focus of state politics. But, the situation has changed now.In the Congress government formed in December 2018, chief minister, speaker of the state assembly, his deputy and four out of a total of 28 cabinet ministers are from Mahakaushal. It’s for the first time in the history of the state that both chief of the executive wing (chief minister) and legislative wing (speaker) are from the same area.Political observer, Ravindra Vajpayee, said “Jabalpur has always been “undeclared” capital of Mahakaushal. We have everything required for industrial and agricultural growth. It is well-connected by air, road and railways; we have mines, mineral and of course water. Besides, Jabalpur could be developed into a tourism spot as it has both the natural beauty and places of religious importance. Chief minister, finance minister and mining minister both hailing from this region would obviously contribute to rapid development of the region.” He pointed out that people of Jabalpur still remember the days of Pt D P Mishra as CM of the state, who remained on the chair from September 30,1963 to March 8, 1967.Pt. Kunjilal Dubey had become the Speaker of first Vidhan Sabha of Madhya Pradesh . He remained speaker from 1956 to 1967 before becoming finance minister of the state in 1967.
