No more waiting for MRI at govt hospitals

BHOPAL: Expect getting a magnetic resonance imaging or MRI scan in the state capital to get a lot swifter. Top two tertiary care hospitals in Bhopal — All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Hamidia hospital — are introducing measures to make the process faster and available at an affordable rate.Wait time for an MRI scan at AIIMS Bhopal is around three months, unless there is an emergency. The premier institute’s director Dr Sarman Singh believes that wait time would be reduced by more than half by February. AIIMS Bhopal which already has a MRI facility, too, would add more of the machines.Around 500 people in the state capital require intervention through means of CT-scan or MRI in the state capital each day. Many of the patients are not natives of Bhopal and their attendants bear an additional burden of residing in the city during the course of treatment.Employing sophisticated technology that has previously been confined to research facilities, the hospital would deploy three Tesla (T) MRI medical imaging standard. Tesla (T) is the unit of measurement quantifying the strength of a magnetic field. Prior to the three Tesla Machine, the high-field standard was 1.5 Tesla. “The strength of a three Tesla MRI yields myriad benefits for radiologists and their patients. Furthermore, hospital would be in a position to hold more surgical interventions as a result,” said AIIMS Bhopal superintendent Dr Manisha Shrivastava. The official inauguration is expected on January 20.One of the MRI machines would now be dedicated for trauma and emergency care. It would reduce wait time and help in faster treatment of trauma patients.Hamidia hospital has MRI and CT scan diagnostic machines operated on PPP basis, a first for a tertiary care hospital in Madhya Pradesh . The service began in October 2017. Taking it further the service is now available 24x7 with optional facility to book a scan in advance, said Hamidia hospital superintendent, Dr A K Shrivastava.For over a year, new diagnostic CT-scan services have vastly helped emergency victims. A neurosurgeon has been attached to JP hospital by the health department.
