Now, garbage-pick vehicles to be monitored with GPS

BHOPAL: Commissioner Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) B Vijay Datta directed the zonal and ward officials to utilise the GPS-based-vehicle-tracking and monitoring system (VTMS) and ensure its effective use. BMC team also surveyed drains in the area which in the past have led to waterlogging.Apart from the fact that the new system has helped the BMC financially by reducing the running cost, fuel costs and maintenance cost, it has helped in checking the unauthorised use of municipal vehicles. He said said VTMS has been installed in almost all civic body garbage picking vehicles.Datta who undertook a surprise inspection of various areas of the state capital here on Monday went around various residential colonies and got a first hand information about the various issues confronting the residents.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) installed VTMS in its vehicles following the diesel scam hoping it would bring in transparency and improve effecuiency.However, the problem is that the system is not being monitored real-time by the officials.“BMC officials authorized with monitoring of BMC vehicles seldom log on to VTMS,” said a senior BMC official.The system not only enables the waste management officials to monitor the vehicles, but also work carried out by the vehicles and the processes. The IT project linked with integrated command and control centre (ICCC) was meant to improve productivity of the overall process of waste management.During the inspection, Datta instructed BMC ward and zonal officers to remove all illegal hoardings, while at a location in Badkheda Pathani he ordered demolition of and encroachment. BMC officials also inspected sanitation and garbage collection process at Avadhpuri, Purnashila, Azad Nagar, Panikshi Vihar and Vishwakarma Nagar colonies.
