Madhya Pradesh: No horses this R-Day after Glanders scare

Glanders is an infectious disease, primarily affecting horses. BHOPAL: Horses won’t be allowed in the Republic Day parade in the state capital this year after 10th case of highly infectious Glanders disease surfaced in a horse here in Bhopal. All horses in the state capital would be tested for Glanders and provided a certificate, confirming that the equine does not suffer from the disease.Despite the scare, horse riding at Boat Club area and horses at weddings continues uninterrupted. Dr Rai reiterated that no horses used by the police force have been found or suspected to be suffering from Glanders. The last case of Glanders was reported in December and the animal was culled.

BHOPAL: Horses won’t be allowed in the Republic Day parade in the state capital this year after 10th case of highly infectious Glanders disease surfaced in a horse here in Bhopal. The disease also puts human lives at a health risk. However, the district administration is yet to crackdown upon the free movement of horses in public areas and weddings.“We have restricted the entry, exit and movement of horses, donkeys and mules within the state capital for three months in the wake of the spread of Glanders, which is a contagious equine disease. The last case of Glanders was reported in December and the animal was culled. Restrictions would be in place for three months”, said Dr DK Rai, deputy director of MP department of animal husbandry, Bhopal division.National Research Centre on Equines (NRCE), Hisar has confirmed ten cases of Glanders in Bhopal. The first case was detected in May 2018. Action plan for control and containment of the disease has been initiated under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009.Many horses participate in the annual Republic Day parade. The surveillance procedure includes spotting of diseased equines (horses, mules and donkeys). Dr Rai reiterated that no horses used by the police force have been found or suspected to be suffering from Glanders. Raising alarm, veterinarians are once again stressing that civilian horses should not be allowed inside the city limits, especially during the three month containment period. All horses in the state capital would be tested for Glanders and provided a certificate, confirming that the equine does not suffer from the disease.Despite the scare, horse riding at Boat Club area and horses at weddings continues uninterrupted. The disease spreads by consuming food or water contaminated by the nasal discharge of the carrier animals.
