BHOPAL: On Day Two of civic body’s drive to keep roads and streets clear of stray cattle and canines, animal rights activists on Thursday reached Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in Mata Mandir area citing cruelty and breach of set protocol in capturing stray dogs. BMC commissioner visited Kanji House on Thursday.A day after acting tough — not releasing cattle after impounding— civic body officials somewhat softened stance on Thursday.

BHOPAL: On Day Two of civic body’s drive to keep roads and streets clear of stray cattle and canines, animal rights activists on Thursday reached Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in Mata Mandir area citing cruelty and breach of set protocol in capturing stray dogs. They alleged that the civic body did not bother to check and impounded sterlised dogs.On Thursday, around 56 dogs were captured in new Bhopal. “There is a set protocol and guidelines under which any animal can be impounded. BMC operation, in violation of norms, is unacceptable. We care for dogs and all other animals,” said Swathi Gaurav, unit head of People’s for Animals.BMC additional commissioner Ranveer Singh , nodal officer for implementing the drive to clear streets of stray animals, said “BMC is working as per norms and any violation would be looked into.” Singh could not meet animal right activists. BMC impounded 80 cattle, 13 pigs, 56 dogs on Thursday from Nehru Nagar, Ishwar Nagar, Dana Pani, 74 Bungalows and nearby places. The drive will continue in these areas for three more days.Over the years, BMC has been criticised both ways. After any stray dog incident and injury to humans. On the other hand, Animal Welfare Board of India report has cited dumping of dogs at waste dump site after capturing animal in inhuman ways. “We would visit dog shelter at Ratibad on Friday. If dogs picked up today are not found there, we would demand action,” said Gaurav.Stray cattle captured during the campaign are being kept at cow shelters. The government aims at rehabilitating over 10,000 stray cattle in Bhopal city. Softening BMC stance, mayor Alok Sharma said cattle would be released without fine in the first instance. Thereafter, stray cattle owners would penalised for every breach. Sharma also announced setting up a state-of-the-art burial space for cattle in the state capital. “The proposal would be brought in the BMC council. It is expected to cost Rs one crore,” said Sharma.
