BHOPAL: "You have been diagnosed with cancer." Sameer (name changed) was told by doctors when he was just in his first year of college. But the words did not lowered his spirits. He not only beat the deadly disease but refused a hefty-paying job and at 31 now, he is helping others diagnosed with the disease to fight back and live.The cancer survivor, who was once diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia - a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects white blood cells - now counsels and works at a cancer hospital in Bhopal. Married and with a child now, he has no medical education to work in the oncology hospital but understands the pain of the oncology patients. "Who else would understand the trauma and tribulations one undergoes on hearing that he has been diagnosed with cancer," says Sameer.On World Cancer Day , Sameer who is from a lower middle-class family, recalls his days of fight against cancer. "I had to undergo two years of chemotherapy at Bhopal's Jawaharlal Nehru cancer hospital. It was worse than a nightmare. But here I am - living and happily. I believe I survived just to help others and give them hope," he says with a smile.Sameer is not the only one to have survived the disease. Meet Rakesh Singh (name changed). Diagnosed with cancer, he gave the disease a tough fight. He is 92 year old now and leading a normal life. "Where there is a will there is a way. We have to fight and at the end of the day, we can win over any ailment," he says.Just like Sameer, the fight was not easy for Rakesh too.
