Education department’s ‘Lakshman-Rekha’ to check tobacco use in kids

It has been observed that due to the shops situated near the school, consumption of tobacco products is rising among schoolchildren. The department of health will have to submit a report to the education department specifying the number of schools around which the ‘Yellow Line’ had been made by the end of February. We want ensure that children do not get addicted to tobacco, gutka, pan, bidi, cigarettes etc. BHOPAL: Stepping up the vigil against sale of tobacco and tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions, the school education department has issued directions to mark a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ around schools prohibiting vendors to set up shop in the area.As per the guidelines issued by directorate of public instruction (DPI), yellow line will be drawn around the school with a 100-yard radius — which will be designated as a ‘No Tobacco Zone’ Commissioner , public instruction, Jaishri Kiyawat said, “The initiative aims to ensure that no tobacco products are consumed in or near schools. Anyone selling or consuming these products inside the yellow line will be punished.”The education department has teamed up with the health department to implement the initiative.A sum of Rs 1 lakh will be allocated to the chief medical and health officers of all the districts, via district collector to ensure that all government schools of all the districts have the yellow-line demarcating the 100-yard area around the school campus as tobacco-free zone.Existing shops or vendors selling tobacco and tobacco products will be removed and strict action will be taken against the vendors who try to cross the ‘Yellow Line’ to sell tobacco products.
