Bhopal: A three-judge bench of Supreme Court headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Friday stayed the execution of school teacher Mahendra Singh Gond, 28, who faced prospect of hanging at 5 am on March 2 for gruesome rape of a four-year-old girl.Mahendra had moved the apex court challenging order of the lower courts after a division bench of MP high court upheld death sentence awarded to him by the trial court at Uchehara town in Satna district on January 25 this year. Subsequently, district & sessions court, Satna, had issued a death warrant for the convict, deciding the date of hanging at 5 am on March 2.In the meanwhile, Gond, who is lodged at Jabalpur Central Jail where he was supposed to be executed, moved the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the lower courts.Following preliminary hearing on Friday, the bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice L Nageswar Rao and Justice Sanjiv Khanna stayed hanging of the convict on March 2.Mahendra’s counsel in high court VC Rai and investigating officer in the case Kiran Karo, both, confirmed to TOI that the apex court has stayed the execution of death sentence for now and the convict would not be hanged on March 2.According to the prosecution, the convict Gond had raped the minor girl after kidnapping her from her house in a village in Satna district on July 1, 2018 in an inebriated condition.
