Miscreants hurl stone at school, kid loses eyesight

BHOPAL: A stone hurled by unidentified miscreants on a school cost a 13-year-old student his eyesight. Corneal tear repair has taken place. Doctors say his cornea is damaged and that chances of getting his eyesight back are bleak.The incident took place on Thursday at government-run Iqra High School in Shahjehabad. Zaheen's mother Kaneez Fatima says the school authorities informed her after an hour of the incident. The stone hit his left eye.

BHOPAL: A stone hurled by unidentified miscreants on a school cost a 13-year-old student his eyesight. The stone hit his left eye. Doctors say his cornea is damaged and that chances of getting his eyesight back are bleak.The incident took place on Thursday at government-run Iqra High School in Shahjehabad. Aiming to be an engineer, Zaheen Khan recalls: "It was lunch break and I was in the toilet. A stone suddenly hit me in the left eye and it started bleeding." Zaheen's mother Kaneez Fatima says the school authorities informed her after an hour of the incident. He was first taken home in an autorickshaw and at around 5pm, he was rushed to Kamla Nehru hospital of Gandhi Medical College (GMC) where he underwent an surgery.GMC associate professor and eye surgeon, Dr S S Kumbre said, "The damage is significant. Corneal tear repair has taken place. Only a sonography report next week will confirm if the eyesight can be restored.""As per protocol, the student should have been rushed to a hospital. We would investigate the matter," said district education officer (DEO) Dharmendra Sharma. School principal Seema Naeem, however, blamed the 'social situation' for the incident. "There have been similar cases in the past and we have reported them to the police. Besides, there is no wall between the school and the adjacent locality," she said.When contacted, SI Dinesh Singh Chouhan, said, "When we received the complaint last time, a 'maitri mobile' (women policemen on two-wheleer) were deployed for patrolling."
