Bhopal’s tryst with colours goes way back to the era of Nawabs

BHOPAL: During the Nawabi era in Bhopal, the preferred destinations for Holi celebrations were the Taj Mahal Palace and Ahmedabad Palace.‘Zamarul Mahal’, the middle portion of Taj Mahal Palace, was the location for Holi celebrations, according to heritage conservationist and historian SM Hussain. Fitted with highly ornamental water architecture and still functioning terracotta and copper pipelines sealed within its roof, it was the destination for Holi festivities. Holi was a great exhibition of the Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb in the city of lakes. People better remember the place as ‘Sawan Bhadon Saehan’.

Towards the end of the Nawabi era, Hamidullah Khan’s Holi celeberations was one of the most anticipated events of the year in Bhopal.In his book, ‘The Home Coming’, author Mohammed Amin Zubairi describes a Holi celebration after Nawab Hamidullah was accepted as the ruler of Bhopal by the British of 1926. Zubairi describes the 'Holi-Durbar' that was celebrated with joy and festivity at the Ahmedabad Palace.
