Bhopal: The sports department has admitted that due to vacant seats of district sports officers, activities of academies are affected. In an order issues on March 19, the sports department categorically stated that those in charge of respective sports academies are directed to inspect the facilities once every month.The move comes in the wake of a recent controversy when a player of the sailing academy was found pregnant. The new order aims to put the onus on officials so that such incidents can be avoided, stated the department officials.To make the officials accountable for their work associated with the sports academies, the department has issued fresh orders about their duties.It is clearly stated in the order that the accommodation, meals, competition, training and infrastructure like electricity, furniture, cleanliness and others must be properly kept in check. Besides, officials are instructed to ensure proper facilities, including medical and education of the players.For academies, which are situated outside Bhopal, it has been made mandatory to conduct inspection once in a month. Any failure will invite trouble for the officials concerned.The academies were established almost a decade ago with an objective of identifying the sports talent of Madhya Pradesh at the grassroots level and provide state-of-the-art training facilities to assure optimal performance of players.It was also claimed that the academies would provide a safe environment away from home that nurtures and develops the individual talents of each student-athlete. Identifying and preparing student-athletes to be world-class sportspersons and providing them with a foundation for success is the motto of the academies. Participation in top national and international tournaments brings out the best in the athletes.
