AIIMS Bhopal to get dedicated 16-bed ward to treat rare TB soon

BHOPAL: A dedicated 16-bed multi drug-resistant (MDR) TB ward would be established at AIIMS Bhopal soon.MDR-TB is one of the most drug-resistant type of tuberculosis that even resists the most effective anti-TB drugs. Typically the prevalence of tuberculosis is about 211 cases per 100,000 population while in Sehariya tribe, it is as high as 3,000 cases per 100,000 population, which is the highest prevalence in the world. There are an estimated 1,000 MDR-TB patients in the state.By adopting simple sociocultural changes, cases of diseases like TB and influenza can be halved, said AIIMS Bhopal director Dr Sarman Singh during a sensitisation programme on World Tuberculosis Day here on Sunday.“India has targeted to eradicate tuberculosis by 2030. Percentage of decrease of prevalence of tuberculosis is 1.5% per year and we need to be at least 5% per year to meet that target of 2030,” said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) director general, Dr Balram Bhargava.Dr Bhargava, who was the chief guest on the occasion, further said that Sehariya tribe has a population of about 6 lakh in central India. Taking it as an opportunity for research, this tribe can be taken care of as it is a big opportunity for the researchers at AIIMS Bhopal, he said.Despite installation of more than 1,150 CBNAAT machines, timely diagnosis remains critical and we need to further enhance the deployment of diagnostic technologies to improve the detection rate, especially in highburden laboratories where a greater number of TB and MDR-TB can be detected, said Dr Singh.AIIMS Bhopal hospital medical superintendent, Dr Manisha Shrivastava elaborated on TB Care at the premier institute and highlighted the services set-up for tuberculosis treatment and care.
