BHOPAL: Almost a year after repair work of VIP road was proposed, the task remains incomplete. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) had undertaken the Rs 5-crore work that should have made for bump-free travel on the state capital's premier 4.5 km road that circumvents the picturesque Upper Lake."I am told that the work to repair the VIP road is in-progress," said mayor Alok Sharma . He did not comment any further, citing election commission model code of conduct. The current election would be the second that has been cited for 'delay' in the repair of the road. VIP and Boat club roads are two main roads which are maintained by the civic body.During the announcement of repair work in May 2018, the mayor had identified VIP road as 'spirit of the capital'. Relaying of road, beautification footpaths and central verge both sides of VIP road from Lalghati to Ret Ghat had been identified by the BMC plan. It was part funded under Chief Minister Infrastructure Development fund. Scope of work included re-carpeting, cementing of pathway and other modifications. The condition of both the roads has never been so poor, say commuters. "There are bumps and potholes on both sides of the road. Heavy vehicles including multi-axle interstate buses ply without any check," said Sumit Sharma, a businessman who takes the VIP every day to work. Movement of heavy vehicles along the road which boarders the wetland area, is prohibited.Since the repair work of the road has been announced, two major water pipeline works - one connecting to EME centre and another to Idgah filtration plant - have been initiated. " Under pressure to repair the road ahead of state assembly elections of 2018, BMC had only accomplished some patchwork.Much of the stretch has been incomplete and repeated queries to the BMC city engineer have gone unanswered," said a BMC corporator seeking anonymity. When contacted Jain refused to comment.
