Recipient of Literoma Star Achiever Award 2020 and author of 5 books, Kolkata-based author Sabarna Roy recently launched his 6th book ‘Etchings of the First Quarter of 2020’ which comprises a novella and a poem cycle. The book is a depiction of relationship of a step-father and a step-daughter with the background idea revolving around dualism and complexity of human relationships and human mind. Where as the foreground looks like a dialogue that takes the readers through the discussions and the density of the relationship of Babazula, the step-father and Tulip, the step-daughter over coffee as they talk about fascinating subject matter of Hegel, Marxism, Love as an idea, the secret love story of TS Eilot; and ecological phenomenon like marine conservation in an extremely captivating way by almost taking the readers in the world of the characters penned in the book. The book is divided into three parts namely; part A,B and C which is A letter to a step-daughter, a letter to Suranjana and a Nocturnal Conversation between a Step-father and Step-daughter over desserts and coffee. The author described his book and his audiences as a thinkers. He said “Etchings of the First Quarter of 2020 is a book about a stepfather reaching out to his stepdaughter, who is in her early years of adulthood and on the cusp of venturing into marine conservation. He reaches out to her with ideas that he partly comes across on the opening day of the Kolkata Literary Meet where he has been invited to speak on the Dark Side of the Mind and partly subjects that are dear to him. The background of the book revealed to me when I was myself invited on the opening day of Kolkata Literary Meet to be a part of the panel discussion on Dark Side of the Mind and I thought in my mind how I will spend the night with my daughter to tell her about what I learnt and shared at the event. I think this book is targeted towards a thinking audience that is concerned with post-modern existential issues” Whereas Roy found the book relevant for the post modern world. “You will find that this book is clearly divided between a Novella, titled: Duality and Winter Poems 2020 consisting of an anthology of 20 poems. The poems were written in March 2020 and the final draft of the Novella was ready in April. This is a slim book. It did not take much time to write but the writing process was extremely intense and dense.” He added. The book concludes with the Winter poems 2020. It is again a journey through several moods of human psyche and the side of brain that makes us commit dark deeds.
