IGRMS displays second exhibit of month ‘Gadi’, a bollock cart

Gadolia Lohar community are mainly found in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Western Maharashtra and Western Uttar Pradesh. Gadolia Lohars are nomadic blacksmith and move from one village to another on a traditionally fixed route. The Gadi also forms an abode for a Gadolia Lohar family which contains all the possessions and necessities required for their living. The Gadulia Lohar bullock cart is heavier and sturdier than the usual village bullock cart.The typical construction lies in its “Thalia” and the “Peechla”. Under the latest and popular online series of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya titled ‘Exhibit of the Week’, The “GADI”, A traditional bullock cart of Gadolia Lohar community from Rajasthan, India has been displayed on Monday in the audience as the second exhibit of the month through official website, Facebook, Instagram and twitter page of the IGRMS. In this regard Praveen Kumar Mishra, Director, IGRMS said that,Due to spread of Covid-19 pandemic the museums throughout the world are closed but identifying different innovative ways to remain connected to their visitors. Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (National Museum of Mankind) has also taken up many new initiatives to face the challenges posed by this pandemic. In one such step it is coming up with a new series entitled ‘Object of the Week’ to showcase its collection from all over India. Initially this series will focus on the masterpieces from its collection which are considered as unique for their contribution to the cultural history of a particular ethnic group or area. These masterpieces belong to the “AA” & “A” category. There are 64 objects in these categories. Gadolia Lohar community are mainly found in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Western Maharashtra and Western Uttar Pradesh. Gadolia Lohars are nomadic blacksmith and move from one village to another on a traditionally fixed route. The Gadi also forms an abode for a Gadolia Lohar family which contains all the possessions and necessities required for their living. Usually they camp in a village for few days during which they make not only new implements but also mend old iron implements of the villagers. The Gadulia Lohar bullock cart is heavier and sturdier than the usual village bullock cart.The typical construction lies in its “Thalia” and the “Peechla”.
