Finally cheetahs complete a year in India! By Ankita Garg : In next phase cheetahs will be brought from South Africa for Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary by the end of year In second year of the cheetah re-introduction plan team will be focusing on breeding of cats After so many ups and down cheetahs brought from Namibia are surviving for past one year in India. Eight cheetahs were reintroduced on September 17 2022 in Madhya Pradeshs Kuno National Park. Besides cheetahs brought from South Africa have completed their seven months. Officials said that cheetah project is now successful in India as more than 50 per cent of cats are surviving for a year. In second phase of the project wildlife experts are set to stress over breeding of cheetahs. However six adult cheetahs have died because of various reasons. In second phase more cheetahs would be brought to India. Officials said that in this phase they will select the cheetah who have lesser chance of being infectious will be selected for translocation. They said that there is no issue with the radio collar of animal. They have decided to replace the collar id of cheetahs manufacture by the same company in South Africa. Member Secretary of NTCA and head of the project S P Yadav said that next year cheetahs will be translocated from South Africa and they will be kept at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. Team has planned to welcome the cheetah at Gandhi Sagar by the end of the year. In cheetah action plan it is mentioned that Kuno has capacity of maximum 20 cheetahs. At present there are 15 cheetahs including a cub. Yadav said that two places Gandhi Sagar and Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary is being prepared for cheetahs. He said that Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is being prepared at faster pace and target is to complete the sanctuary by November end. A team will be visiting the sanctuary in first week of December and then further decision will be taken as per the report. Yadav said that some cheetahs were died of infection. He said that during rainy season humidity moisture in air and temperature causes irritation itching in body and then animal scratches their body on trees branches that harm the skin. After that flies and other insect lays egg and cause infection in the wound.
