Bhopal: A private hospital in Bhopal is all set to perform the state's first liver transplant from a live donor. The rare feat would be attempted within six months of the Central India's first cadaveric liver transplant here.Experts from Siddhanta Red Cross (SRS) super speciality hospital said after the successful cadaver liver transplantation, they would soon attempt to split a liver into two from a living donor and give a lease of life to the recipient."We expect Bhopal to become a centre for excellence in healthcare. Our team has proven that by carrying out liver and kidney transplant from brain dead," said SRS managing director Upamanyu Trivedi. The procedure is expected to cost an estimated Rs 17 lakh.Splitting the liver from the donor, the patients would take about three weeks to recovery. Matching and getting the right liver is also a part of the problem. As per estimates, nearly 50% of livers from live donors and 80% of those from cadavers are rejected because there is excess accumulation of fat in the organ.Every year, more than 60,000 people die in India due to liver failure. At most, just about 1,500 lives are saved with liver transplant. Cases of liver and renal failure is fairly high in Bhopal. It includes the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy, as well. Over medication is cited as one of the primary reasons.At a press conference on Saturday, SRS hospital urologist Dr Saurabh Jain and Nephrologist Dr AD Suri informed that a 38-year-old patient, who recently underwent kidney transplant was discharged. He was hospitalised for 8 days and is expected to make a full recovery.Another patient of renal failure, who underwent cadaveric transplant on April 17, is expected to be discharged on Monday.Meanwhile, in another private hospital, a cadaveric donation from brain dead person could not take place on Friday. Sources said that the relatives of the deceased had agreed for organ donation .
