Morena liquor contractors want to shut shop

Many of 27 contractors have multiple shops in the district.

On April 9, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced that the state is moving towards phased closure of liquor shops" and a day later finance minister Jayant Malaiyya said the government is "ready to impose total prohibition if people are ready to quit alcohol".Liquor contractors in Morena have not been able to open vends in Gurjar-dominated areas after a spiritual guru on April 15 administered an oath to the community to give up booze or face a steep fine. Community members said they will impose a fine of Rs 11,000 if any Gurjar is found drunk, and asked liquor contractors to shut shop.Raja Parmar, a liquor contractor, told TOI, "There is no business. When we met the collector, there was no assurance of help. What should we do and how long can we incur losses? It's a legal business, but we can't do despite the fact it generates revenue for the government." Many of 27 contractors have multiple shops in the district. Disciples of Baba Harigiri Maharaj of Morena had taken out sharab bandi (prohibition) rallies in villages.Morena assistant commissioner, excise, Vandana Pandey said: "There is some problem in some areas. The issue is being resolved."
