Tribals in Sheopur district give kerosene for water

BHOPAL: Facing acute water crisis, tribals in several villages of Bhimlat panchayat in Sheopur district are forced to barter kerosene for water. Villagers said each family is allowed to fetch water in 7 containers only.Admitting the crisis and exchange of kerosene with water, district collector Abhijit Agrawal told TOI, "Yes it happened. But when I came to know, we made arrangement and now no tribal is exchanging kerosene for water. The kerosene is required to power generator for running a tube-well.About 35 km from the district headquarters of Sheopur, villages are located in Saharia tribe-dominated Karhal block of the district bordering Rajasthan In the absence of water, personal hygiene has become a big issue among tribals facing the menace of malnutrition. Bhimlat has a population of about 500.Devi, another Saharia tribesman says villages around Bhimlat are facing acute water crisis.All dug-wells dried up.

Kanta , a Saharia tribesman says, he gets 5 litres of kerosene from fair price shop (FPS) in a month. He is required to give 250 ml of fuel every day to get 5 utensils full of water.Every day, tribals assemble near tube-well of Bhimlat village, hand over a bottle of 250 ml of kerosene to a man operating tube-well, which is connected with a generator set running with kerosene. Bhimlat has a population of about 500.Devi, another Saharia tribesman says villages around Bhimlat are facing acute water crisis.All dug-wells dried up. When kerosene stock at home is exhausted, they go in search of it and fetch it for Rs 35 a litre. He said many villagers do not take bath for 7 to 10 days because of severe shortage of water.In neighbouring Kalmi village, the tube-well is run every alternate day. Villagers said each family is allowed to fetch water in 7 containers only.Admitting the crisis and exchange of kerosene with water, district collector Abhijit Agrawal told TOI, "Yes it happened. There was a phase when the villagers faced such crisis for few days. But when I came to know, we made arrangement and now no tribal is exchanging kerosene for water."Agrawal said, "There is enough water, but no electricity in villages. They will start getting power in six months."He said now the situation is back to normal. Sources said water shortage is so acute in villages that construction of houses under PM Awas Yojana stopped.
