BHOPAL: With the students' union elections scheduled on November 27, a few bottlenecks have cropped up in private colleges. Several of them are reluctant to provide information to presiding officers fearing that it may subject them to critical scrutiny . Reason: Many of the colleges have a plethora of problems-inadequate infrastructure, under-staffing, lack of students' attendance. Some colleges are even believed to have principals 'on paper only'.Taking a cue, Barkatullah University (BU) has decided to review all the colleges affiliated to it in 8 districts.During a meet with BU's registrar U N Shukla, the presiding officers informed him that several of the 350 affiliated colleges were not following guidelines. "In one campus, there are multiple colleges and even a school being run. It is surprising that these campuses were given affiliation and recognition," said a senior professor.Such is the mismatch that the portal of higher education department uploaded the list of 60 private colleges in Bhopal while the state government portal mentions that there are 49 private colleges in the state capital. "There are colleges running in the middle of market, they do not even have playgrounds. They are just a showpiece," said a senior teaching faculty who has been appointed presiding officer. Several colleges have changed their address and the new address is either not updated or is simply-unavailable, Shukla was informed. "In several cases it was noticed that other structures have come up where colleges were supposed to be. No one knows where the new campus is ," said a teaching faculty. Some colleges have shown classes at one place while the rest of the infrastructure is elsewhere, Shukla was told. "This is happening in the heart of Bhopal. Several colleges have shown their playgrounds some 20-25 km away from classrooms. Come these students use these playground? It is a farce," said a teacher from a government college.NSUI alleged that a big nexus between university officials and private college owners has been exposed. "There is a rule of inspecting a college before giving it affiliation. What did the inspection team do? This is a big scam which needs to be probed thoroughly," said NSUI's state spokesperson Vivek Tripathi . Claiming that several colleges have been running for a decade now with full strength of admissions, Tripathi said: "Are these private colleges for issuing degrees only? How come no one has ever noticed that colleges are not fulfilling guidelines?" Tripathi also said he will raise the issue with authorities of higher education department.Registrar U N Shukla admitted that there are problems with some colleges. "As polls are close by, it is not possible to mark out such colleges. I have directed the colleges to make the elections successful. However, I will start a review of each college after polls to check whether they are following guidelines or not," said Shukla. "I will ensure that no college is let-off. If they are not following any guideline then it will cost them affiliation," said registrar Shukla.
