BHUBANESWAR/SAMBALPUR: The BJP on Monday urged the enforcement directorate (ED) to find the beneficiary and source of the Rs 40.5 lakh seized from a vehicle in bypoll-bound Bijepur on Saturday.A delegation led by party's state vice-president Samir Mohanty submitted a memorandum to the joint director of ED here and demanded a detailed probe into the illegal cash movement. The party also met chief electoral officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar and requested him to take action against L N Panda, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Padampur, for allegedly violating the code of conduct by bringing an allegation against BJP without a proper probe.The SDPO has mentioned in his report that the illegal cash was being taken for use in BJP's campaign. "How can a government officer make such comments without conducting a proper probe," said Mohanty.The party leaders demanded dismissal of the SDPO. Police have also dragged Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) into the controversy. "Both the organisations have denied the allegations," he added.Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan dared the Bargarh SP to inform the ED and IT in the matter. "We have been alleging that the SDPO is appointed to help BJD. If the Bargarh SP is so transparent, he can transfer the case to ED and Income Tax department? The truth will come out after ED probe," he said.BJP's national spokesperson Sambit Patra also criticised the SPDO for the report. "The police officer is working as member of the ruling party. He should maintain his neutrality as a police officer," said Patra in New Delhi.Senior MLA and BJD spokesperson Amar Prasad Satpathy said the police have come up with their report after investigation. "The BJP is reacting because the report goes against it. They are scared of the possible defeat in the bypoll," he added. The SDPO did not take TOI's phone calls despite repeated attempts to contact him.On Sunday, police arrested Padampur-based jeweller Om Prakash Agrawal and his son Akash Agrawal in the seizure of Rs 40.5 lakh cash. "Police have brought the father son-duo on remand. They are being interrogated," said SDPO (Padampur).
