87% of 8 lakh public toilet users rate them 'clean'

Out of the 50 modern toilets planned for the city, work on 18 has been completed.

BHUBANESWAR: Eighty-seven per cent of the eight lakh people who have provided feedback on the nine toilets across the city have rated them 'clean'.This is expected to help the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation BMC ) fetch a good score in the Swachh Survekshan (cleanliness survey) 2018.The feedback mechanism was introduced last February and enables toilet users to rate them 'clean', 'okay' or 'dirty'. A machine installed in the toilets not only records feedback, it sends the data directly to a BMC portal. While the green button is for 'clean', the yellow and red buttons are for 'okay' and 'dirty', respectively.Nine per cent of the people voted the toilets 'okay' and four per cent thought they were 'dirty', said a BMC officer."The huge participation shows that people are getting accustomed to the hi-tech feedback mechanism. Earlier, they would come to the BMC office to file their complaints. The feedback mechanism has helped us improve toilet management as well," an official said.Sanitary inspectors have been asked to improve the condition of toilets based on the feedback. "It will help us monitor the condition of the toilets and get people's perspective on sanitation in the city," he added.The city had slipped to the 94th rank in last year's Swachh survey, from 24 in 2016.The BMC has so far completed construction of 14 community toilets out of the 17 planned for slum pockets. Out of the 50 modern toilets planned for the city, work on 18 has been completed. Both the public and the community toilets will be ready by the end of March.
