His role in the infamous Lokhandwalla shootout and handling the communal riots in Mumbai during 1992-93 had brought him accolades from several quarters. He was also the investigating officer in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.The Maharashtra cadre IPS officer had received the President’s police medal for his distinguished service in 2003. He is also a recipient of police medal for meritorious service.After his retirement from the service in 2015, Patnaik associated with a number of philanthropic and non-profit organisations. BHUBANESWAR: Former Mumbai police commissioner and retired IPS officer Arup Patnaik started his political journey by joining the ruling BJD in presence of party president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar.The 1979-batch Maharashtra-cadre officer is likely to be the ruling party's candidate either from Bhubaneswar or Puri Lok Sabha constituency in the Lok Sabha polls, said sources in the BJD.Welcoming him to the party, the BJD president said, “I don’t think Arup Patnaik needs an introduction. I am very happy that he joined the BJD today. He will be a tremendous asset to the party.”A number of senior BJD leaders from Puri and Bhubaneswar were present at Naveen Niwas during the induction programme.Arup, in his reaction, said, “I am grateful to the chief minister for giving me an opportunity to work for the people of my land. I am very much encouraged to join the ruling party under the clean and dynamic leadership of the chief minister.”To the queries whether he would contest the 2019 elections, Arup said he joined the ruling party as a worker and will give his best to perform in any work assigned by it.A native of Delanga block in Puri district, Arup had served in many positions in Maharashtra during his 36-year-long career in the police department. He is one among the trustees of Mumbai-based Konark Cancer Foundation that helps in providing logistical supports like accommodation, doctor appointments and in some cases financial helps to cancer patients visiting the city for treatment from across the country especially from Odisha According to the BJD insiders, a number of retired bureaucrats would join the ruling party in the run up to the 2019 assembly and general elections.
