BHUBNESWAR: Cash crunch in ATMs at various places has triggered a war of words between the ruling BJD and BJP here on Friday. As the ruling party decided to hit the streets over the issue, the BJP retaliated accusing the BJD of trying to create fear psychosis in the people’s mind over the issue. As ATMs run dry in various parts of the state, BJD leader and former minister Sanjay Das Burma said his party would stage a two-hour silent protest near the RBI regional office here and in front of nationalized banks across the state on Saturday.“There has been an undeclared financial emergency in the country. As ATMs of almost all banks in the state are running dry, people are facing hardships in getting cash. After the multi-thousand crore Punjab National Bank scam, people have also lost their faiths in the banking system. They don’t feel it safe to deposit their money in banks,” said Das Burma at a news conference here.Das Burma said the purpose behind the party’s move is to make people aware about the issue. “We don’t intend to affect the daily functioning of the banks. We would ensure that people visiting banks should not face any kinds of problem because of our protest,” he added.Quoting the facts from SBI research, Das Burma said even as the Centre and the RBI have claimed that there was no shortage of currency; the SBI research pegged the cash shortfall in the system at a whopping Rs 70,000 crore.“The country is suffering because of the faulty economic policies of the NDA government . Demonetization has failed to curb black money and corruption. Rather, it spoiled the economy of the country,” said party leader Arun Sahoo , who was also present during the news conference.Sahoo said there was apprehension that the situation arises as some major political parties hoard cash in view of the Karnataka elections. “It is unfortunate that the people are not able to get their hard earning money which they have deposited in various banks,” Sahoo said.BJP vice president Sameer Mohanty accused the ruling BJD of trying to politicize the issue. “If there is cash crunch, the chief minister should convene representatives of various banks. Instead of doing that the BJD is trying to create fear in the minds of people,” said Mohanty. Both BJD and Congress have raised the issue in the state assembly on Thursday and criticized the Centre for the situation.
