BHUBANESWAR: The government on Tuesday announced early summer vacation in all schools from April 25 in the wake of severe heat wave conditions across the state. Summer vacation was scheduled to begin from May 4 as per the academic calendar."Most parts of the state are reeling under severe heatwave conditions, making life miserable. Even for morning schools children have to suffer the intense heat while returning home at around 11 am. So we decided to advance the (summer) vacation," school and mass education minister Badri Narayan Patra said. However, teachers would be coming to school till May 4, he added.Following the government order, many private schools decided to start the summer holidays from Thursday itself. "It's a practical problem as the government issued an order for school holidays late in the evening. We have lot of work to do before the vacation like giving holiday homework and assignments to students," said the principal of a leading private school. The sudden showers in the evening has had little effect on the daytime temperatures, which on Tuesday stood at around 39° Celsius in the city while it touched 43° in the interiors.A number of people have been complaining of fever and dehydration due to fluctuating temperature caused by the intense heat and rainfall. "I am suffering from severe headache, fever and dehydration due to difference in day and evening temperatures," said Santosh Sahu, a courier delivery boy."Rain accompanied by thunder and lighting during afternoons is a common phenomenon in this part of India during summer. These rains are sporadic and within a few minutes it causes severe damage. But it does not have much impact on temperature," said Sarat Chandra Sahu, director of IMD's regional office in Bhubaneswar."Generally nor'wester occurs once in week or so in the month of May, but this year it has been occurring almost daily accompanied by hailstorm from the beginning of April. As the freezing point has dropped to a lower level in the atmosphere, it has been causing more hailstorms this season. Chances of rain and thunderstorms, mostly in coastal pockets, will continue this week amid rise in mercury level," Sahu added.Several parts of the state recorded heavy rain and hailstorm last evening. Chandbali recorded 33.6 mm rain followed by 22 mm at Gopalpur, 14.5 mm at Keonjhar, 14.6 mm at Phulbani and 9.7 mm at Puri in the last 24 hours.Sundergarh recorded the day's highest temperature of 42° Celsius in the state.
