He was speaking on the inauguration of four core facilities at Jindal Steel and Power Limited’s steel plant in Angul on Saturday."India has planned to increase steel production from the current 134 MTPA to 300 MTPA by 2030. Of this around 30% will be produced in Odisha. With rich mineral resources and skilled human resources Odisha has the potential to produce 100 MT steel alone and can be the steel hub of India," Singh said. The 6 metric tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity steel plant constructed with an investment of Rs 35, 000 crore is the first plant in the country to use indigenous coal through coal gasification technology for producing steel. The facilities inaugurated at the steel plant include world’s largest synthesis gas-based direct reduced iron (DRI) plant, coal gasification plant, a blast furnace and 3 MTPA basic oxygen furnace. With the modern facilities the plant's production will increase from the current 2.5 MT per month to 5 MT per month by the end of 2018.Singh said, India's steel sector has been growing at an annual growth rate of five per cent. “India has become the second largest steel producer in the world leaving behind Japan and US. With around 28% car of the world to be manufactured in India we need high quality steel.”He further added that at present international scenario the per capita consumption of steel is 208 kg while in India the per capita consumption stood at 67 kg. “We have targeted to achieve 160 kg per capita consumption by 2030,” he added.Union Petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauded JSPL’s efforts to use the latest technology in the plant which will help in reducing pollution levels. “The steel plant helped in creating employment and alleviating poverty in the region.” He said, JSPL chairman Naveen Jindal has agreed to allow the use of Jindal airstrip in the Udaan scheme for the benefit of the locals.Speaking on the occasion Jindal said, “We are trying many new and innovative things in steel making like using pet coke from Paradip refinery, try for coal linkage from MCL, use imported coal and may use cocoon gas in the DRI plant. In a month we would be able to run the plant in full capacity. Now the plant is running with 2.5 lakh MT per month and increasing it every month. The coal requirement of the plant is around two million tonnes per annum.” The plant has given direct employment to 15,000 people and in coming day the employment will increase up to 25,000, he said.
