Hour-long heavy rain causes waterlogging in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: An hour-long heavy rain caused waterlogging in different parts of the city throwing life out of gear on Saturday afternoon. A car was seen floating on the flood water. National Highway 16 in front of Iskcon temple was looking like a pond due to waterlogging.Cars and auto-rickshaws were stuck in the flood water in front of the temple. Bhubaneswar municipal corporation (BMC) staff used four motor pump sets to drain out the flood water.“We used two motor pumps at Paika Nagar and IRC Village to drain out the flood water. Some parts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts may receive heavy rainfall on Sunday, said the India meteorological department sources.

Due to this situation, movement of vehicles was stopped for an hour on the NH causing heavy traffic jam.“Due to lack of proper planning of drainage system near the Iskcon and other places in the city, waterlogging is happening every year. The smartest city of the country should fix the problem for the betterment of the city residents,” said Simanchal Mishra, a resident of Nayapalli.People with their bikes were seen taking shelter below the flyovers between Baramunda and Rasulgarh causing traffic congestion in the busy junctions. The city received a rainfall of 16.2 mm.Paikanagar in Nayapalli area, Ahalya Nagar in Patia, Lane 3 of IRC Village and Iskcon temple area witnessed waterlogging in the afternoon. Bhubaneswar municipal corporation (BMC) staff used four motor pump sets to drain out the flood water.“We used two motor pumps at Paika Nagar and IRC Village to drain out the flood water. Similarly two motor pumps of fire services were used at Iskcon temple to clear the flood water,” said Pradeep Sagar Duria, executive engineer of BMC’s drainage division.Rain also lashed many other parts of the state. Areas like Gopalpur, Bhawanipatna, Balangir, Titlagarh, Phulbani, Koraput, Daringibadi and Cuttack received rainfall on Saturday. Weathermen forecast rain will continue till July 4 in several parts of the state. Some parts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts may receive heavy rainfall on Sunday, said the India meteorological department sources.
