Adaptive traffic signal system inaugurated in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: In order to streamline the traffic system of the capital city, the state has installed adaptive traffic signal control system or intelligent traffic system at 50 intersections of the city. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday inaugurated it at AG Square here.This traffic system, a part of the smart city programme, will improve travel time reliability by progressively moving vehicles through intersections. It is run by solar power.This system will not only collect real time traffic data but also optimize the signal phases in real time to reduce delays.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday inaugurated it at AG Square here.This traffic system, a part of the smart city programme, will improve travel time reliability by progressively moving vehicles through intersections. It will reduce congestion by creating smooth flow of vehicles across intersections. It is run by solar power.This system will not only collect real time traffic data but also optimize the signal phases in real time to reduce delays. Instead of a fixed waiting time, this traffic system will predict traffic volumes and adjust signal timings to match these volumes, said a senior officer of the Bhubaneswar municipal corporation (BMC).Naveen inaugurated another major project ‘Bhubaneswar Operations Centre’ along with Bhubaneswar Smart City Office at BMC Bhawani Mall Complex. It is a first-of-its-kind centralized command and control centre which will monitor, operate, and control existing services of the city.The Adaptive Traffic Signal System, tracking of buses and municipal vehicles along with grievance redressal system is being operationalised at present from this centre.The state-of-the-art centre includes a massive video wall of more than 80-foot length and will be used to monitor the large volume of close circuit television (CCTV) footage and highly sophisticated sensor data.The chief minister also inaugurated six smart parks at Saheed Nagar. Four of these colony parks, located on a single stretch, but separated with by-lanes, were taken up for re-development as a single active play-cum-activity space, especially for children. It has facilities like open air art gallery, open air amphitheatre, splash park, watch tower, kids play zone, half basketball court and open air gym. It has four theme zones- Get Creative, Get Rest, Get Smart and Get Wet.Similarly, the fifth park in Saheed Nagar has been re-developed based on ‘Get Fit’ theme based on fitness with interactive play. The sixth one has been redeveloped with a theme of ‘Get Green’. It has adequate sitting space, plaza for small community gatherings and ample space for meditation activities.Naveen also laid the foundation stone for a Sensory Park for children with special needs in Saheed Nagar and an Integrated Public Service Centre (IPSC) at Bapuji Nagar. This centre will have components like bill payment centre, dispensary, crèche and community group space, ward office, multipurpose hall, library and reading room and skilling centre.“We have received Rs 400 crore for the smart city projects. We have completed phase-I of the projects. We will next inaugurate several projects including Smart Janpath project in the second phase,” said Vineel Krishna, CEO of the Bhubaneswar Smart City SPV
