Odisha 101yearold man undergoes successful cataract surgery

BHUBANESWAR: Doctors at government-run Capital Hospital performed cataract surgery on a 101-year-old man, a native of Puri district . "It is a milestone in eye-care for the state of Odisha because there is no record of any patient above 100-years-old to undergo cataract surgery. They say he is the oldest patient to have undergone the surgery in Odisha. The cataract was also matured so we could remove it successfully," Meherda added.She said, in case of old-age patients people generally avoid surgery. "In this case the patient is very active and most importantly the retina was normal.

The world record is of a 109-year-old man from China."It is a milestone in eye-care for the state of Odisha because there is no record of any patient above 100-years-old to undergo cataract surgery. There were several challenges as the patient was not able to sleep upright (with his face up) due to some problem in his back. So the surgery had to be finished really quick. We completed the surgery in five minutes, which is again an achievement" said Dr Aswani Meherda, eye specialist.Sources said, Jayakrushna Mishra , has lost his eyesight for the last three years. "I visited doctors in Capital Hospital about a year ago and they suggested for surgery. But due to old age I ignored. But later when I came for check-up again doctors convinced me. I am so happy that I got my eyesight back and could see everything and play with my grandchildren," Mishra said.Doctors said, they operated in his right eye and the cataract in the left eye will be removed in the next 15 days."In this case the patient is very active and most importantly the retina was normal. The cataract was also matured so we could remove it successfully," Meherda added.She said, in case of old-age patients people generally avoid surgery. "With this case it is proved that there is no bar for cataract operation and if the retina is normal then anyone can get back their vision," she pointed out.A four-member team of assistants helped her in the surgery.
