The lawyers also burnt the effigy of the Union minister late on Wednesday evening."Prasad's letter on the high court bench clearly indicates that the Centre lacks the interest to set up permanent high court benches in western and southern Odisha," said spokesperson of the central action committee (CAC) of Western Odisha Bar Association Sureswar Mishra.Naveen had written to the Centre for establishment of high court benches in western and southern Odisha on September 5."The Union law minister's letter to the state government is absolutely confusing. He has mentioned about the need of consent from the Chief Justice of high court. But the consent of the high court is not required. If the Union government is interested to set up permanent benches of high court, it can establish the benches by exercising its power under an Act of Parliament," said Mishra.Earlier, the state government had written a letter to the Centre to take steps for establishment of high court bench in western Odisha in 2013. The CAC of the association had also staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar over the demand on November 28, 2016."During the agitation, we had called on the Union law minister. He had assured that he would take steps for establishment of the bench but his letter has come as a shock," said president of Sambalpur Bar Association Bijitendriya Pradhan.Senior BJD leader and Rajya Sabha member Prasanna Acharya said , "The state government is ready to provide all the required infrastructure. Though the chief minister has written several times, the Centre is shifting its responsibility". He also said consent of high court is not required to set up a high court bench. The Centre is playing a hide and seek game, he added.
