Tigress Sundari under WII watch, could be captured and brought to core of Satkosia

Sundari was brought from Bandhavgarh on June 29 and was released to wild after lodging it in enclosure for nearly two months. On Tuesday, it was suspected to have killed a cow in Rangpur village under Athmallik range.“Villagers in around 200 villages in Satkosia landscape are under fear. Three weeks after its release from enclosure, a woman was allegedly killed by it. The report has said, “Injury is consistent with destruction by carnivorous animal”.

BHUBANESWAR: Baffled by tigress Sundari’s movement in buffer areas of Satkosia landscape, the wildlife wing of the forest department on Wednesday dropped a hint that the feline would be brought to the core instead of the enclosure, where it was lodged for initial 50 days before being released.Satkosia field director Sudarshan Panda told media that the scientists of Wildlife Institute of India (WII) were closely monitoring Sundari’s movement. “If necessary, the tigress will be captured and released within the core of Satkosia,” Panda said.The tigress brought from Bandhavgarh tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh has now robbed sleep of the forest department. Three weeks after its release from enclosure, a woman was allegedly killed by it. The autopsy report has hinted at tiger kill. The report has said, “Injury is consistent with destruction by carnivorous animal”. It has not named it was tiger or any other wild animal.The incident had taken place at Hatibari village following which the villagers ransacked the Tikarpada range office and burnt down forest rest house. They have been demanding shifting the tigress out of the Satkosia landscape.Sources said based on the report of WII scientist K Ramesh, the chief wildlife warden of the state Sandip Tripathy has communicated to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) that if required the tiger would be brought to the core of Satkosia.The predator is currently moving in Athmalik region. On Tuesday, it was suspected to have killed a cow in Rangpur village under Athmallik range.“Villagers in around 200 villages in Satkosia landscape are under fear. This is not a good sign as in such cases people would get revengeful. The animal may be hurt or the animal may hurt any human or cattle,” said Biswajit Mohanty, a wildlife campaigner.Earlier, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had advised the state chief wildlife warden that translocation of tigers should be avoided in peak of summer and during monsoon . Sundari was brought from Bandhavgarh on June 29 and was released to wild after lodging it in enclosure for nearly two months.
