Decriminalizing Adultery, Isn't It Bit Utopian

  • | Monday | 1st October, 2018

It may sound progressive and a step forward towards gender equality but how many of us can gather the guts in favour of a mental preparedness to digest the reality of adultery in family life is hard to guess.                                                                              By D N Singh

No matter that the provisions interpreting adultery as criminal which dates back to 1860 and by now archaic in the light of the paradigm shift from then to now when the buzz is all about gender equality but, certain question keep lurking in a common Indian mind.

Saying that  it will transform the social concept about the relationship between a husband and a wife allowing each other the freedom to keep a relationship outside the family, sounds a bit utopian and oxymoronic. Even in some most advanced countries the contagion of an alien partnership or physical relation outside the family, poses the dangers of intolerance.

It is not to say that there will be a utopian fidelity in the existing format of adultery  but what is required is a split in the two sides of individual mind-sets and establish a realistic one which must remain inured to the age-old moral scruples which binds two sides so strongly that any deviation in loyalty can erode the foundations of compatibility and sometimes forever.

How many Indian couples can vouch with their hands on their chest and say that they would not mind if their other half has an intimate physical relationship with another man or woman. It may sound progressive and a step forward towards gender equality but how many of us can gather the guts in favour of a mental preparedness to digest the reality of adultery in family life,  is hard to guess.

It is not a ‘crime’ but can be a ‘ground for divorce’. This itself creates the issue of moral legitimacy that would be questioned every other day by the one or the other who might get torn between old virtues and paganism. The endemic repulsion towards adultery (now gone to history !) that many nurtures within is not mere orthodox idiocy but an unwillingness to mask surrender in the cloak of progressiveness.
