'Celebrate Joy of Week by gifting a family to vulnerable kids'

Research shows that children living outside of family care experience negative effects on their development. “Institutional care should be the last resort for a vulnerable kid,” said Rajendra Meher , secretary of YCDA.Meher said his organization has been advocating for alternative care for the vulnerable children since 2009. Under the foster care provision, CWC can send a child to a family for his/her rehabilitation. “Under foster care provision, we want people should take care of these children voluntarily by applying before the child welfare committee (CWC) of the respective district. The organization supports the family to take care of the kid.

BHUBANESWAR: In order to promote the concept of providing family to every child, who are separated from their parents, a non-government organization YCDA in association with Unicef and the state government appealed people on the occasion of ‘Joy of Giving’ week to help the kids to get family care.The purpose of their ‘Gifting a Family’ campaign is to support and extend solidarity for family-based care as a solution for rehabilitating vulnerable kids instead of putting them in childcare institutions . “Institutional care should be the last resort for a vulnerable kid,” said Rajendra Meher , secretary of YCDA.Meher said his organization has been advocating for alternative care for the vulnerable children since 2009. This type of care is provided to these children by people other than their parents. “Under foster care provision, we want people should take care of these children voluntarily by applying before the child welfare committee (CWC) of the respective district. If they find it difficult, they can sponsor a kid by paying some allowances monthly,” he added.The organization is presently running the programme in Balangir, Boudh and Khurda. Under the foster care provision, CWC can send a child to a family for his/her rehabilitation. The organization supports the family to take care of the kid. “We hope the people will come forward and support the families directly to nurture the kids without parental care,” said Meher.Besides, the people can adopt such kids and take them to their homes forever. “Our main objective is to gift a family to a child. Research shows that children living outside of family care experience negative effects on their development. A safe and caring family can give a child the most stable start and equip the child to live a fulfilling life,” he added.Sources said the state government is planning to start helping the foster care model to keep the children in families instead of putting them in childcare institutions.
