Cyclone Titli: Heavy rain triggers flood; 30 lakh people affected in Ganjam

BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Thursday directed collectors of Ganjam , Gajapati and Rayagada to evacuate people to safe places as incessant rain triggered by cyclonic storm Titli created flood-like situation in Rushikulya and Vamsadhara rivers.Over 30 lakh people in 3250 villages under 22 blocks in Ganjam district affected due to flood situation in Rushikulya and its tributaries; several people at Kashinagar in Gajapati and Gunupur area in Rayagada district affected due to flood in Vamsadhara river , official sources said.Both the rivers were flowing above the danger level by 8 pm on Thursday.“We have asked the district collectors of the three districts to shift people from thatched houses to safe places. We are keeping a clot watch on the situation,” said special relief commissioner Bishnupada Sethi.Over 3 lakh people including 1.98 lakh in Ganjam were evacuated to safe places because of cyclonic storm.Flood situation is grim in Ganjam as over 27 villages comprising 9200 people marooned. Over 50,000 hectares of standing crops affected because of the flood. Three breaches occurred in Rushikulya in Dharakote block in Ganjam.The Ganjam district administration has opened 395 free kitchens to provide food to evacuated people from flood-affected area.“While road communication, disrupted due to cyclonic storm, has been restored. 42 numbers of mobile medical teams have been deployed while 145 medical relief centres opened by the district administration. 115 pregnant women shifted to Maa Gruha,” said an official.In Rayagada district, free kitchen is being provided to more than 500 people at Gunupur and Kalyan Singhpur in view of flood in Vamsadhara.
