Car rental service to debut during Hockey World Cup

BHUBANESWAR: The state transport authority (STA) has engaged a firm that will provide self-drive car rental service to visitors at the ensuing Men’s Hockey World Cup here. “We have been informed by the company that it will mobilize around 30 cars during the Men’s Hockey World Cup,” Panda said. The hockey event will kickstart at Kalinga Stadium here from November 28 to December 16.To ensure hassle-free mobility of tourists during the Hockey World Cup, the state government decided to mobilize around 300 new city buses on different routes. Currently, around 115 city buses are plying on different routes in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri.The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) too has decided to start eco-friendly public cycle-sharing system in the city ahead of Men’s Hockey World Cup. The company will collect Rs 5,000 as security deposit from customers and charge around Rs 70 for an hour’s drive.

This is the first time such 'rent a cab' scheme has been launched in Odisha “We gave licence to Zoomcar to start the self-drive car rental service in the capital city as we anticipate huge inflow of tourists during the forthcoming mega sporting event. The service will benefit the tourists,” STA chairman and state transport commissioner Sanjeeb Panda told TOI.Sources said those, who want to take the car on rent, need to download Zoomcar App and upload their driving licences and Aadhaar for verification. The company will collect Rs 5,000 as security deposit from customers and charge around Rs 70 for an hour’s drive. Sources said the company will offer around five litre fuel for one-hour drive.Panda said tourists will benefit from the service as they can travel anywhere and drop the cars at the company’s designated hubs at different cities in the country. The company is likely to open hubs at different places in Odisha soon. At present the company has its lone hub in Bhubaneswar with five cars. “We have been informed by the company that it will mobilize around 30 cars during the Men’s Hockey World Cup,” Panda said. The hockey event will kickstart at Kalinga Stadium here from November 28 to December 16.To ensure hassle-free mobility of tourists during the Hockey World Cup, the state government decided to mobilize around 300 new city buses on different routes. As many as 2,000 cycles with global positioning system (GPS) will be made available in the first phase before the mega sporting event. The cycles will be kept at various cycling dock stations and cycle stands and will be available on a rent basis.
