There is no question of hiding deaths. But one also must understand that the government has to verify before making anything official,” said BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra.a “While 40 died in Gajapati district alone, five died in Chikiti block of Ganjam district,” Baxipatra said, adding “it’s unfortunate that the government is not ready to concede the deaths. Because of continuous mandate for 19 years, the BJD government has become arrogant and indifferent to people’s plights,” Dharmendra wrote.“Naveen’s slogan zero casualties turned out to be self-promotion propaganda as many people died. The government has been doing its best to mitigate people’s sufferings.

BHUBANESWAR: Pointing out serious lapses in handling of cyclone Titli and the subsequent flood by the Naveen Patnaik government that left more than 20 dead, the BJP on Sunday said the scale of damage aggravated because of poor management of the situation.Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan , in a Facebook post followed by a press release, alleged the Naveen government’s “casual approach” and “administrative inaction” worsened the destructions. Three senior BJP leaders (Bhrugu Baxipatra, Sameer Mohanty and Prithviraj Harchandan), in a news conference, accused the government of hiding the death toll to keep its image unblemished.“Despite clear weather forecast of very heavy rain triggered by the cyclone, the government was found wanting in its preparedness and in managing the aftermath. People were left to suffer. Because of continuous mandate for 19 years, the BJD government has become arrogant and indifferent to people’s plights,” Dharmendra wrote.“Naveen’s slogan zero casualties turned out to be self-promotion propaganda as many people died. Instead of accepting the damage, the government is on a denial mode,” the Union minister wrote further.Baxipatra, Mohanty and Harichandan, who visited the affected areas in separate teams on Friday and Saturday, said they can confirm at least 45 deaths. “While 40 died in Gajapati district alone, five died in Chikiti block of Ganjam district,” Baxipatra said, adding “it’s unfortunate that the government is not ready to concede the deaths. It is hiding the death toll to give a positive spin to state’s tackling of the disaster, especially because Naveen had spoken of ‘zero casualties’ target. The BJD countered the BJP, saying the saffron party is trying to draw political mileage out of the natural disaster. “It shows their desperation. An unfortunate natural calamity has happened. The government has been doing its best to mitigate people’s sufferings. There is no question of hiding deaths. But one also must understand that the government has to verify before making anything official,” said BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra.a
