Cyclone Titli: Death toll rises to 26 in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government on Tuesday confirmed 26 deaths in cyclone Titli & subsequent flood.Total 18 deaths were confirmed in Gajapati district which was one of the worst affected in the cyclone. The cyclone and flood also caused severe damage to fisheries and animal resources sectors.According to official data, reports of more than 20,000 house damage have been from 16 districts. Also, more than 100 roads were damaged.The SRC said most of the departments have submitted reports on damages to properties and infrastructure and they would come up with a preliminary report on damage assessment by Wednesday. While 15 people died in landslide in Rayagad block, three more casualties confirmed due to wall collapse.In other districts, three people died in Ganjam while one each in Angul Cuttack , Kandhamal, Keonjhar and Nayagarh mainly due to wall collapse and drowning.“The district collectors have been asked to sanction ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased within three days,” special relief commissioner Bishnupada Sethi told reporters here.When asked about reports of more unconfirmed deaths in Gajapati, the SRC said a team comprising health department officials, police and executive magistrate have been deployed in each block to investigate into the allegations of deaths and to submit reports after all formalities.The SRC said over 57 lakh people in 16 coastal, southern and interior districts affected in the twin calamities.As per preliminary estimation, 1.48 hectares lakh of paddy crops and 65,000 hectares of non-paddy crops damaged in the disasters.
