Odisha Govt turns to private players to realise its healthcare dream

Under the Odisha Affordable Healthcare Project, the state plans to establish primary and secondary care hospitals in all the 30 districts through public and private partnerships. With 83 per cent of the state's population living in rural areas, the project envisages provision of primary and preventive care services in the interiors of the state. The private partner is supposed to develop and run well-developed infrastructure with modern facilities.The health department at present runs around 1,300 primary health centres, 377 community health centres, 27 sub-divisional hospitals and 32 district headquarters hospitals (one in each of the 30 districts besides Capital Hospital and Rourkela Government Hospital). They would be selected in a transparent bidding process.B R Shetty, chairman of the UAE-based BR Life, which has taken over Kalinga Hospital in the city, Alok Roy, chairman of the Medica Group of Hospitals, and Azim Sabahat, co-founder and CEO of Glocal Healthcare, were among those who appreciated the government's plan for affordable healthcare projects.During the occasion, Jena also released Vision 2025, the government's vision document to ensure healthcare for all. BHUBANESWAR: The state government hopes to attract investments worth Rs 2,750 crore from private entities in the healthcare sector within the next three years, health minister Pratap Jena said at a session of the Make in Odisha conclave on Tuesday.A government statement said it was eyeing investments of Rs 1,300 crore in affordable healthcare projects in 25 locations, Rs 700 crore for diagnostic and dialysis services , Rs 600 crore in cancer-care projects, Rs 90 crore for digital dispensaries (facilities managed by pharmacists where OPD consultation will be given by doctors through video-conferencing) and a heart hospital at Jharsuguda at a cost of around Rs 60 crore.Jena said several private sector players had evinced an interest to invest in these areas.
