BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Legislative Assembly on Saturday accepted the apology tendered by defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra and dropped the matter pertaining to ‘derogatory’ comments made by him on the state assembly and its members. The assembly passed the recommendations of a house committee led by leader of opposition Narasingha Mishra , that was looking into Iyer-Mitra’s remarks against the assembly and its members. The assembly also asked the state government to provide material to Iyer-Mitra to educate him about the art, culture, history and the people of the state, as suggested by the house panel.Narasingha said the assembly accepted the apology keeping in mind the fact that he had tendered it voluntarily. “More importantly the assembly asked the state government to provide educative materials on state’s art, culture, history and people of Odisha because Iyer-Mitra had said he made the remarks out of his own stupidity,” Narasingha told TOI.Earlier in the day, the Narasingha-led panel submitted its inquiry report into the alleged breach of privilege against Iyer-Mitra. “The committee recommends that the august house may be magnanimous to consider and accept the apology begged by Shri Abhijit Iyer-Mitra for his statement made by him before the media against the honourable members of the august house and drop the matter,” the panel said in the report. The committee also observed that the ‘person’, who accompanied Iyer-Mitra during his visit to different parts of the state, should have told him about the rich culture of Odisha. Mishra did not elaborate on who the ‘person’ was, when asked by TOI.Odisha assembly speaker Pradip Amat had constituted the house panel on September 20 after members across party lines raised the issue of Iyer-Mitra’s statements against the assembly and its members and cited alleged breach of privilege.Iyer-Mitra is in jail since October 23, the day he first appeared before the assembly panel, in connection with a case registered against him in Saheednagar police station for his alleged defamatory remarks on Odisha and Odia culture.
