Residents of Kalinga Nagar demand better roads, sewerage system

BHUBANESWAR: Residents of the K-9B locality of Kalinga Nagar in the city demanded proper roads and a sewerage system in their area. Waste water discharged from the houses flows on some of the roads as the area lacks a sewerage system. "Hence, the BDA should construct roads and a sewerage system," he added.City mayor Anant Narayan Jena said a tender had been floated for the construction of the approach road. The Orissa Water Supply and Sewerage Board will look into the sewerage work," he added. The area becomes a mess during the monsoon due to lack of drainage channels," said Surath Kumar Dhal, president of Kalinga Nagar K-9B Residents Welfare Association.Dhal said a private firm had damaged the approach road to the area while constructing a sewerage system for its apartment block.

The locality, which was developed in 1991, now has more than 120 houses and three apartments.Locals have been running from pillar to post requesting the government to solve civic issues in the area. They have asked both the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to look into their issues, but nothing has come of it. The roads are rough and have potholes at different points. Waste water discharged from the houses flows on some of the roads as the area lacks a sewerage system."People have built septic tanks behind their houses but it is not enough. The area becomes a mess during the monsoon due to lack of drainage channels," said Surath Kumar Dhal, president of Kalinga Nagar K-9B Residents Welfare Association.Dhal said a private firm had damaged the approach road to the area while constructing a sewerage system for its apartment block. "The firm stopped the work after we lodged a complaint with local police and the BDA," he added.Association secretary Prabir Mohapatra said the approach road connecting Kalinga Nagar with NH-16 needed the attention of the urban body. "This road is very dusty as it is kutcha. Riding a bike on the road is tough. Heavy vehicles plying it do further damage," he added.He also said the houses here had been built upon land sold by the BDA in 1991. "Hence, the BDA should construct roads and a sewerage system," he added.City mayor Anant Narayan Jena said a tender had been floated for the construction of the approach road. "We have installed street lights in the area. The Orissa Water Supply and Sewerage Board will look into the sewerage work," he added.
