Schools slam CBSE over heritage quiz mess

  • | Thursday | 10th January, 2019

In the previous 17 editions of the quiz, students from the state had done very well, becoming national champions thrice and runners-up seven times. After the exam was over, we immediately lodged a complaint with the CBSE,” said Sambit Sahu, a Class IX student of a city school. The CBSE has decided to conduct only one online test for the national-level quiz. Three students from classes IX to XII from each school take part in the quiz as a team. Over 200 teams from the state participated in the quiz, held on December 19.

BHUBANESWAR: Following technical snags during the online ‘Heritage India Quiz’ conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE ) in December last year, students of different city schools demanded that the quiz be conducted again. They also opposed the CBSE’s decision to do away with the city and zonal-level versions of the Heritage India Quiz — a flagship programme of the board. The CBSE has decided to conduct only one online test for the national-level quiz. Three students from classes IX to XII from each school take part in the quiz as a team. Over 200 teams from the state participated in the quiz, held on December 19. The results were announced on December 26.“Of the 50 questions, one could only attempt 10 or 12 questions due to technical snags. The server was so slow that the questions did not appear on the screen within the given time. After the exam was over, we immediately lodged a complaint with the CBSE,” said Sambit Sahu, a Class IX student of a city school. He added that several officials admitted to the server glitch and assured prompt action. The results have come as a shock to the students. In the previous 17 editions of the quiz, students from the state had done very well, becoming national champions thrice and runners-up seven times. This time, no one from the state was selected in the 20 teams that will compete in the finals.“Almost every school faced the glitches and the teams were preparing for a retest when the CBSE suddenly came out with the results. Twenty schools have been invited to Delhi for the national rounds. We don’t know on what basis they were chosen as the server was unresponsive throughout the test and most schools couldn’t even appear for the quiz,” said a teacher of a city school, requesting anonymity.“Schools make extra effort to prepare the students for the quiz as it is a matter of prestige. Such glitches disappoints them,” said Pravat Mohapatra, a parent. The students also alleged that the CBSE did not publish any merit list for the quiz, releasing only the names of the 20 qualifying schools.“The marks these qualifying schools scored is not known. There is no transparency,” said S K Mohanty, another parent.
