Naveen Patnaik launches free LED bulb distribution scheme

BHUBANESWAR: Around 95 lakh households registered under the National Food Security Act or the State Food Security Scheme will get four LED bulbs free of cost as chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched the ‘Ama Ghare LED’ (LED in our home) scheme. The bulbs will be distributed in PEETHA camps to be held during 15th to 20th of every month.
To ensure transparency, beneficiaries will collect the bulbs by giving their biometric authentication at the camps, said official sources. The new scheme of the state government has not gone down well with the opposition parties as BJP spokesperson Golak Mohapatra criticizes the BJD government of hijacking Central scheme.Mohapatra said the state government tries to fool people by launching the scheme ahead of elections while the people have already made up their mind to dethrone the BJD government. The Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya), last mile electrification scheme of the Narendra Modi government also assures an LED bulb among others.
The eligible beneficiaries can also receive the bulbs in public distribution system (PDS) outlets across the state. The chief minister launched the scheme during the Ama Gaon…Ama Bikash (our village… our development) initiative, perceived to be the largest people connect exercise that was held in seven blocks across five districts. The initiative is also seen as an effort of the Naveen Patnaik-government to reach out to the rural poor ahead of the simultaneous elections due in April-May.“Due to non-availability of quality LED bulbs at reasonable price in rural markets of Odisha , consumers are using incandescent/CFL bulbs for which they are paying higher electricity bills.
While we would provide bulbs of nine watt each with better lighting, low quality bulbs consume 60 to 100 watt each,” state energy secretary Hemanta Sharma told reporters. The state government would spend around Rs 250 crore for the initiative from its own resources to procure over 3.8 crore LED bulbs.Distribution of LED bulbs will start from January 15 in the People’s empowerment-- enabling transparency and accountability of Odisha Initiative (PEETHA) camps, which are being organized to create awareness on government schemes.Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited, a PSU under the state energy department is the nodal agency to implement the scheme.
