BHUBANESWAR: Students of Utkal University on Thursday staged demonstration in front of the administrative building of the institution demanding security in the campus. They also raised other issues related to hostel amenities during their agitation.The student group torched tyres in the campus and shouted slogans against vice chancellor for not solving these problems.The university spread over around 400-acre of land has no boundary wall on the sides of Laxmi Vihar and VSS Nagar. Sometimes anti-socials flee from these sides after committing theft or attacking students. Slum dwellers have encroached around 50 acres of land. The authorities cannot construct boundary walls in the encroached areas fearing backlash. Security guards have been deployed at main gate near Vani Vihar square and west gate on the side of Acharya Vihar.The security guards conduct checks during the time of campus election. But they do not check visitors after election period is over. Though CCTV cameras have been installed at the main gate, west gate has no such cameras. Some of the CCTV cameras installed in the campus are not working properly, said Asit Ranjan Das, a student.“I met with an accident due to speed driving of an outsider in the campus. Last year students had nabbed an outsider who was misbehaving with the hostel girls inside the campus. Security is a major problem in the campus,” said Das.The students also raised the poor condition of wi-fi service in the campus. They demanded the authorities to solve water problem in the hostels. “Sometimes water does not come in time. It was a huge problem in a women’s hostel a few months ago,” said an agitating student.University vice chancellor Soumendra Mohan Patnaik could not be contacted after repeated phone calls.
