Two days after man ends life for not getting government help to build a house

As she was not in a position to attend Peetha (Peoples Empowerment - Enabling Transparency and Accountability of Odisha Initiatives) programme in her panchayat, our officers gave her the work order at her home.

BHUBANESWAR: The Khurda district administration on Friday issued work order of a house under Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana (BPGY) for Laxmidhar Behera’s wife of Nirakarpur. Behera had committed suicide on Wednesday night allegedly for not getting government assistance for making a house.Video clips of Behera pleading government for help went viral on Thursday. He had alleged that some government officials had asked him for bribe to get work order for house. Soon after this, Khurda collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra had ordered a probe into the matter.Saroj Kumar Sahoo, sub-collector of Khurda, on Friday visited deceased’s house and started preliminary inquiry into the issue to find out truth behind the death of Behera. He along with other government officers met deceased’s wife Kumari and gave her the work order of the BPGY house.“The work order is in the name of Behera’s wife Kumari. As she was not in a position to attend Peetha (Peoples Empowerment - Enabling Transparency and Accountability of Odisha Initiatives) programme in her panchayat, our officers gave her the work order at her home. She can now start the construction work of her office,” said Sahoo.District collector Mishra said he had signed the work order in the name of deceased’s wife on December 31. “Work order was issued on January 10. It was kept to be distributed among the beneficiaries at the Peetha camp to be organised on Friday. So Behera’s allegation regarding district administration’s apathy is not true,” he added.BJP Yuva Morcha members staged demonstration in front of the collector office at Khurda protesting the state government’s failure in ensuring house for poor people. They also lashed out at the district administration for not implementing the rural housing scheme in letter and spirit.On Thursday, Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP leader Aparajita Sarangi had visited the family members of the deceased. They had dubbed the suicide as ‘state sponsored murder’. BJD leader and Khurda MLA Rajendra Kumar Sahoo had also met family members of the deceased.
