Police did not allow farmers to stage rally in city on November 5 last year demanding price, prestige and pension to farmers.Akshaya Kumar, national convener of the NKS, said farmers have been urging the state government for allocation of Rs 21,600 crore in its annual budget to make necessary provisions to pay pension of Rs 5,000 per month to 36 lakh poor farmers of the state. They will also demand hike in minimum support price (MSP) of paddy to Rs 2930 per quintal instead of paying a meager Rs 1750 now, he added.“We want the government to fulfill these demands before the code and conduct for general elections come into force. So we want to impose pressure on the government to do it immediately,” said Kumar, adding, “We took the decision to call for Odisha bandh because the state government with the help of the police does not allow us to hold any demonstration or rally anywhere to speak our mind.”Kumar said the state government should understand that lobby of farmers is more important than any corporate or industry sector. “It should raise bonus on every quintal of paddy as a kind gesture to the hard work of the farmers. If the government does not pay heed to our demands, we will show our strength at right time,” he added.NKS state convener Seshadev Nanda said they have been organizing rallies, movements and demonstrations during last seven years for good price, prestige and pension for farmers in the state. “Farmers should lead a dignified living because they feed the people.
